The Chris Moneymaker Story

If you ask the average person who won the World Series of Poker in 2002, most would be hard pressed to come up with the name of Brooklyn resident Robert Varkonyi. On the other hand, nearly everyone who has watched a poker tournament on television can tell you that the 2003 champion was Chris Moneymaker.

The aptly named Moneymaker heralded the poker boom by winning the WSOP main event as an amateur. He wasn't the first amateur to win it, nor even the first to qualify by WSOP satellite. But events conspired to make him possibly the most famous World Series of Poker winner ever.

But who is Chris Moneymaker? Before his name was synonymous with poker, Chris Moneymaker was just another accountant from Tennessee, one who had perhaps a little too much of a fondness for gambling. As a kid, Chris ran a dice game in his basement with his friends in the neighborhood, quickly learning how to take advantage of the maxim Òthe house always wins.Ó After awhile, this expanded to come up with any time of game they could think of to bet on, including pool, cards and random sporting contests.

By the time he got to college at the University of Tennessee, Chris was ready for bigger action, and he found it, in the form of high stakes sports betting. As with many poker players, this discovery turned out to be a disaster for Chris, and he racked up huge losses betting on sports.

In 2003, with a modest accounting job, a wife and child and mounting debt, risking $10,000 on a poker tournament was the last thing on his mind. He had, however, discovered PokerStars, and its cheap buy-in tournaments were a great way for him to satisfy his gambling urges. On a whim, Chris entered a $40 step WSOP satellite, a two table tournament that offered entry into a World Series of Poker satellite for the winner. Chris was pleased to find himself the winner, and was determined to fully focus on the WSOP satellite, even though he had no intention of playing in the World Series of Poker.

When he made the final table of the satellite, Chris' goal was not to win one of the three seats offered, but rather the $8,000 fourth prize, money he could desperately use. However, a friend agreed to give him $5000 for have his seat if he won, so Chris went for it, and got one of those coveted seats. That friend backed out, but Chris' dad and other friends picked up the slack, and Chris was ready for the World Series of Poker.

Shocking the world, Chris battled through 839 opponents and won it all, as more people watched than ever before, due to the recent invention of hole card cameras that could show viewers what all the players held. From $40 at home in Tennessee, Chris Moneymaker had become a millionaire in Vegas, and in 2003, sat on top of the poker world.
